pulse the earthbeat
Did you know that our Earth has an Heart?
In the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Africa, the Earth pulsates.
Every 26 seconds, for over 60 years, seismographs around the world have recorded a regular and mysterious signal, imperceptible to the human ear but as constant as a heartbeat. This pulsation originates in the Gulf of Guinea, near the volcanic island of São Tomé, and has become one of the great enigmas of geophysics.
Known in science as long-period microseism, scientists have determined that it is not linked to earthquakes, but appears to originate from recurring natural processes. It is also hypothesized that it may arise from the interaction between ocean waves and the seabed, or from constant, mild underwater volcanic activity. Although its origin is still unknown, the heartbeat remains identical and unchanging every 26 seconds, with a precision that makes it unique in the world.
Scientific publications can be found about this phenomenon.
Simbolism
From the Beat to the Light
Pulse Earthbeat sculpture translates this invisible signal into light
In the project, the earth's heartbeat translates into an intensification of the light coming the top of the heart, like a flash, which repeats every 26 seconds, visually reproducing its rhythm.
Our hearts beat with that of the earth!
Pulse Earthbeat - translates the invisible beat signal into light as
a "breath of the planet"
Pulse Earthbeat project explores the deep connection between humanity and the vital rhythm of the Earth.
